What does the “福” (fú) character mean?
“福” means good fortune, blessing, or happiness. It’s one of the most iconic symbols of Chinese New Year and is used to express a wish for prosperity and peace in the year to come.

Why do people hang it during Chinese New Year?
Displaying the “福” character is a long-standing tradition to invite good luck into the home. It's typically placed near doorways, entry tables, or windows as a symbolic gesture of welcoming fortune and protection.

Why is it sometimes hung upside down?
In Mandarin, the word for “upside down” (倒, dào) sounds like “arrival” (到, dào). So when “福” is upside down, it creates a playful homophone:
“福倒了” (fortune is upside down) sounds like
“福到了” (fortune has arrived).
It’s a festive visual pun embraced for good luck.
